Napier museum is one of the oldest museums in India located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It was established in 1857 by the Maharaja, Uthram Thirunal. In 1880 the old building was demolished and a new museum architecture was executed and is opened to the public by Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal. The name is coming after Lord Napier, the former Governor General of Madras. This historical building was constructed under the design of Mr Robert Chisholm. He was the consulting Architect of the Madras Government.

This Art Museum is run under the Kerala Government. The building design is famous for wonderful museum architecture. Its roof is constructed in Gothic architecture. The walls are painted in multicolour. The building is more attractive in blue, yellow, pink and cherry red. Wide balconies are supported by wooden corbels with carved yalis or dragons. The museum ’s ceiling is constructed in teakwood and has hand-painted panels and beams with gold-coloured inlays that glint in the light. Oriental paintings of leaves and flower in different colours are yet another attraction of the museum Architecture. Most of the paintings have been done using natural vegetable dyes. The museum’s wall is double layered which keeps the inside cooler always.

The important collections of the museum include:
BRONZE IMAGES: The art of making metal idols have been practised in Kerala since long years back. The idols of Siva, Vishnu, Parvathy and Lakshmi in different forms have been placed in the museum. They have been done in bronze and copper.
WOOD CARVINGS: The ceiling is attractive with wooden carvings. The rafters and beams are filled with puranic figures.
Stone sculptures, Coins, Ivory Carvings, The sword of Velu Thampi Dhalawa are the other attractions in the museum.

Natural History Museum has located nearby the east gate of the museum compound.

The Muesium location is well organized for public access. The famous zoo in Kerala, Natural History Museum, children’s park, a beautiful garden, jogging path,  Snake gallery and various entertainments are also established around it to emphasize the museum Architecture.
