Kowdiar Palace – The historical building in Thiruvananthapuram

Kawdial Palace, the oldest and well-maintained historical place located in Thiruvananthapuram , the capital city of Kerala.  This palace was built and maintained by the Travancore royal family.

Kowdiar Palace was built by Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma in 1934 on the occasion of the marriage of his sister Maharani Karthika Thirunal Lakshmi Bayi. This palace is more attractive by its splendid architectural beauty.

The palace was constructed as a fusion of Kerala style with some Chinese elements. We can also feel the British colonial touch as it was the time of British in Kerala. This palace was the last palace built in the 20th century. .Most of the designs are instructed by his mother Sethu Parvathi Bhai herself.

Palace was constructed on Vasthu  Shastra and is supervised by Grandfather of Malayalam actor Jagathy Sreekumar. A German Engineer also contributed his ideas for the construction of Kawdier palace. This palace has more than 150 rooms built over 3 floors.

A very beautiful garden was there in the front of the palace, it was also designed by the German engineer.  It is built on 100 acres of Land area. The palace is located on a small hilltop and it is about  300 meters above the sea level, provide a fresh wind from the Arabian Sea from its west side.

There are 6 small towers are placed on the rooftops, copper metal rods are then mounted on the top of the towers which protects the palace from a lightning strike. The radius windows are the yet another attractive feature of the palace which add charm and beauty to the palace. Windows and doors are placed in such a way that wind always flows inside the palace from its all windows and doors. It always keeps a nice environment inside the palace. Since the palace is occupied by the members of Travancore royal family the public visit is restricted.

It is one of the best tourist places in Thiruvananthapuram district.
